Vagrant Story creator Yasumi Matsuno recently shared ideas for a potential sequel in a social media post, describing its gameplay premise.
The discussion began after Matsuno celebrated his 61st birthday on October 24, 2026. Akitoshi Kawazu, known for his work on the SaGa series, responded by asking what kind of gameplay Matsuno would develop for another Vagrant Story.
Matsuno explained that he would retain the original game’s combination of third-person action and command-based RPG mechanics. However, he believes a sequel would need its own identity instead of merely embodying the direction of games such as Elden Ring or The Legend of Zelda.
One concept involves introducing companions, something Matsuno originally wanted to implement in Vagrant Story but abandoned because of the PlayStation’s hardware limitations. These companions would primarily be ordinary civilians. Some could become valuable allies because of their individual abilities, while others might be hard to protect.
The proposed gameplay would involve entering a sealed-off city, rescuing stranded civilians, and escorting them to safety. People closer to the city’s outskirts would be easier to rescue, while reaching survivors deeper inside would be trickier. You’d also need to find weapons, armor, and medicine in the surrounding vicinities.
Depending on the player’s actions, certain survivors might become impossible to rescue. Matsuno also suggested introducing moral dilemmas similar to the trolley problem to force difficult decisions. Plus, conversations with survivors would gradually reveal the story’s details.
