One Piece Is Welcoming The New Commander Of The Straw Hat Pirates

The Straw Hat Pirates are the protagonists of the story in One Piece. Following the events of Wano, specifically in One Piece chapter 1053, the Straw Hats were promoted to the status of a Yonko crew. Ever since then, each member of the Straw Hat crew serves as an elite Commander under the Yonko Monkey D. Luffy. Overall, the Straw Hat Pirates feature nine powerful Commanders, including the two wings of Luffy: Zoro and Sanji.

Although the Straw Hat Pirates are incredibly powerful, the Elbaf arc has seen to it that their weaknesses have been exposed, and the need for one more Commander has been highlighted in the climax of this arc. In One Piece chapter 1193, released officially on September 13, 2026, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Double Issue #42-43, Eiichiro Oda once again set up the final Commander of the crew, which we are all, at this point, anticipating to be none other than Princess Shuri of the Esperia Kingdom.

One Piece Is Expanding The Straw Hat Pirates With A New Commander After Elbaf

The Straw Hat Pirates ascended to the rank of a Yonko crew in chapter 1053, which was officially released on June 20, 2022, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 29. Since then, the Straw Hats have made their mark on the New World, having escaped a nearly impossible situation in Egghead, and gone up against the forces of the World Government in Elbaf. While they are incredibly impressive, it must be said that the Straw Hats lack the manpower of a traditional Yonko crew. Out of all the Yonko crews that we have seen, the Straw Hats have the fewest Commanders so far. The Big Mom Pirates featured a wide array of Commanders, along with an Enraged Army of over 10,000 people. Meanwhile, Kaido's Beast Pirates also featured elite Commanders, as well as some low-ranking Commanders that were extremely impressive. The Red Hair Pirates and the Blackbeard Pirates both have 10 powerful Commanders under each Yonko, Shanks and Blackbeard, respectively. Meanwhile, Monkey D. Luffy only has 9 Commanders under him.

In order for Luffy to match up to the other Yonko crews, he most certainly needs additional Commanders, and that is precisely why Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the series, has created the perfect Commander for him in the form of Princess Shuri. Shuri showed up in Elbaf as Gunko alongside Shamrock Figarland in One Piece chapter 1134, which was officially released on December 23, 2024, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Double Issue #4-5. Since then, her character has been significantly expanded upon, especially in the Esperia Kingdom flashback. In this particular flashback, it was made quite clear to us that Gunko was actually brainwashed by Nerona Imu and turned into a demon slave.

"If that wasn't a hallucination and the Princess was actually a victim back then, then, can I please ask your support in putting my faith in Princess Shuri once again? Would you give me your strength to save the Princess?" — Brook and Straw Hats go in to save Shuri, One Piece Chapter #1186

Immediately after the conclusion of the Esperia flashback in One Piece chapter 1186, it was officially confirmed that the Straw Hat Pirates are now working towards the rescue of Princess Shuri from the clutches of Nerona Imu and the World Government. Given that Esperia doesn't exist any longer, the only place for Shuri to be would be to sail alongside the Straw Hat Pirates. In One Piece chapter 1185, Shuri also clearly stated that she wanted to be a pirate and sail the seas with Brook, setting up the perfect opportunity for her to become the next Commander of the Straw Hats. On September 13, 2026, One Piece chapter 1193 finally showed Princess Shuri waking up, which means that her heartfelt conversation with Brook, decades after the Esperia Kingdom Incident, will finally begin soon.

Shuri: Didn't you want to become a Pirate, Brook?

Brook: I'm happy to put my dreams on hold while I repay my debts to his majesty.

Shuri: Then, when the time comes, I'll sail with you!

Why Shuri Will Be The Last Commander Of The Straw Hat Pirates

The Straw Hat Pirates most certainly need another Commander if they are to go head-to-head with the other crews that have at least 10 Commanders. Right now, the Straw Hats only have 9 Commanders, and there is an undeniable need for one more. This last Commander is most likely going to be Shuri, and the primary reason for this is that neither Loki, Yamato, nor Bonney are anywhere close to joining the crew. Fans believed Loki would be the perfect candidate for the position of the last Straw Hat Commander, but he has since made his desire to stay in Elbaf known quite clearly. Loki has rejected Luffy's offer to join the Straw Hat Pirates, and given that he is now seen as a savior in Elbaf, it is highly likely that he will stay behind to defend the country from any incoming threats.

“Loki and the Straw Hats are fighting those demons for us as we speak. Get it? If we let them take the kids, their struggle will have been for nothing! Our job is to simply hold off this big creature [Zaza] for them!!” — Dorry and Brogy arrive, One Piece Chapter #1193

Meanwhile, Jewelry Bonney wants to ensure that Kuma is restored and will most certainly stay alongside Vegapunk in the new laboratory in the Sun World of Elbaf. Yamato continues to protect Wano, and that leaves behind Princess Vivi, who is nowhere close to Luffy at this point in time. Shuri, meanwhile, does not have a home and needs to be protected from the forces of the World Government. To that end, she is the only logical choice to be the last Commander of the Straw Hat Pirates, and given her immense strength, she is the perfect fit.

Shuri's Strength As A Potential Straw Hat Commander

As a Commander of the Straw Hat Pirates, Shuri would be a valuable asset, and this is because she is an incredibly competent fighter. The Straw Hats need more firepower if they are to compete with the top-tier fighters of the other crews. Shuri, on her own, is strong enough to go head-to-head with elite Commanders and hold her ground. In the Elbaf arc, specifically in One Piece chapter 1146, released on April 21, 2025, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #21, Shuri was seen taking on half of the Straw Hat crew and effortlessly defeating them. She is significantly stronger than the likes of Jinbe, and while her true powers have not been shown to us yet, she should be stronger than any Yonko First Commander as well.

Shuri has access to at least two types of Haki: the Color of Observation and the Color of Arms, and she may potentially even have the Color of the Supreme King, given that Imu used it through her. More importantly, she has the power of the Aro Aro no Mi, which is an incredibly strong Devil Fruit ability that allows her to produce arrow-like appendages, and attack with them. With all her powers combined, Shuri is incredibly skilled and strong enough to deal with the elite pirates of the One Piece world. She will certainly be an exciting addition to the Straw Hat Pirates and push their overall powers to an even higher level. With Shuri joining as the last Commander of the Straw Hats, the crew will finally be able to even the playing field against the likes of the Red Hair and the Blackbeard Pirates.
