A Danganronpa Movie Produced By Blumhouse Rumored To Be In The Works

Despite the last major entry releasing nearly a decade ago (not including Danganronpa S), the Danganronpa fandom is still more than alive and well at this point, with plenty of excitement surrounding the upcoming remake and spinoff story attached to the second game in the franchise. As if that wasn't enough, a recent discovery seems to imply the franchise might be getting a full-blown movie or TV show adaptation in the near future.

While this technically wouldn't be the first time a Spike Chunsoft game has gotten a real-life debut, with both Danganronpa and The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- getting Japan-exclusive stage plays, this would mark the first live-action film project the studio has ever produced.

As shared by DrIsaac25 on X, some Danganronpa fans on Reddit were able to track down a copyright filing between Spike Chunsoft and Blumhouse TV LLC that was initially filed in 2022 and finalized in June 2024. While we don't know much else about the confirmation, it's hard to imagine both parties would spend so much time and effort establishing a governmental copyright without anything to show for it afterward.

The discovery also comes not long after Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka teased on X that he "received an amazing offer" of a new project, which fans had been assuming would be a gaming crossover with a live-service title like Fortnite or, more likely, Dead by Daylight if Behaviour Interactive's recent teases are anything to go by.

While it seems more likely to just be teasing another gaming collaboration, some fans have been speculating it could involve the actual start of a movie project for the infamous detective series instead.

The Murder-Mystery Franchise Still Has Potential

Since the reveal, fans have been going wild over what it could mean for the series as a whole, while also noting how hard it would be to cram the 20-40 hour story of a typical Danganronpa game into a single movie if Blumhouse was interested in making a one-to-one adaptation.

Given that even the 13-episode Danganronpa anime struggled to capture the entire story of the first game, it seems much more likely the project would offer a unique take on the franchise, which has been a growing trend in recent years for gaming adaptations, with movies like Resident Evil, Sonic The Hedgehog, and even Blumhouse's own Five Nights At Freddy's movies achieving plenty of success with the concept.

While it remains to be seen what the adaptation will be about, or when we'll get to hear more, Danganronpa 2x2 has shown there's still plenty of room to explore the series moving forward, even if it involves new characters or entirely new settings within its uniquely despair-inducing world.
